The provisions of the law 2594/1998 (Official Gazette A? 62), which ratifies as a Code the draft law “About Organization of the Ministry”, regulate the mission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the responsibilities, leadership, structure, cooperation with other Ministries, State Authorities and Liaison Offices, the relative implementation of the provisions of the Civil Service Code and the official representation of the Hellenic Republic before international judiciary bodies.
The (Ministry's) mission
- The Ministry's mission is the exercise of the country’s foreign policy which comprises:
- all issues pertaining to international relations, international cooperation as well as the country’s international policy
- the international representation of Greece
- the advocacy of Greek interests abroad
- the strengthening of international legitimacy
- Conducting foreign policy involves monitoring, planning, implementation and evaluation.

Approximately 2,500 employees hold a permanent position in the Ministry of Foreign Affaires, 1.500 of occupy a post in Greek Missions abroad. The ratio of men to women is 1,150 to 1,350 respectively.
The (Ministry’s) structure
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is based in Athens comprising the Central Service, the Regional branches and the Service abroad. The latter consist of the diplomatic and the consular authorities.
