The 101 parliamentarians elected in February 2001 belong to three parliamentary factions, set up at the beginning of their mandate:

  • Communist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PCM) - 71 MPs
  • Our Moldova Alliance "Braghis Alliance" - 11 MPs
  • Popular Christian Democratic Party - 11 MPs
  • Independent deputies - 8 MPs

 

Bilateral relations

Introduction

Greece established diplomatic relations with Moldova in 1992. The Greek Ambassador in Kiev has a parallel accreditation to Chisinau. The Republic of Moldova established an Embassy in Athens  in 2003.There is an historical Greek community in Moldova of about 3,000 members.

Political Relations

Bilateral political relations are characterised by a spirit of close cooperation and mutual trust and are based on the traditional and historical ties of friendship between the peoples of the two countries.

The exchange of high level visits in recent years (former Moldovan President Mr. Lucinschi to Athens in 1999 and Greek President Mr. Stephanopoulos to Moldova, in March 2004) gave a new impetus to  the development  of bilateral cooperation  in all fields.

Economic relations

Greek exports to Ìïldova amounted to €3.191 million in the first half of 2003.

Thirty Greek companies are active in Moldova. Total invested Greek capital amounts to $5.3 million (October 2003).

Economic relations are improving continuously, with an ever-increasing amount of business activity on the part of Greeks in Moldova, particularly in the sectors of construction and commerce.

Greece also grants humanitarian aid to Moldova ($2.53 mil. for the period 1997-2003).

Contractual framework

The two countries have concluded a satisfactory number of agreements, which have established a broad legal framework for activities. The following agreements are of particular interest: Friendship and Cooperation Agreement, Economic, Industrial, Scientific and Technological Cooperation Agreement, Investment Promotion and Mutual Protection Agreement, Air Transport Cooperation Agreement, Avoidance of Double Income Taxation Agreement.
