The Foreign Minister of Albania, Mr. Islami, paid a three-day working visit to Greece (15-17 September). He held discussions with his counterpart, Mr. Molyviatis, and Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Valinakis. He met with the Minister of Public Order, the Minister of Tourism and the Mayor of Athens, and he was received by the President of the Republic.
During their discussions, the two Ministers noted that Greek-Albanian bilateral relations have made considerable progress, and reaffirmed their will with regard to the further development of those relations. The remarkable achievements in the field of defense and security cooperation and the important economic role of Greek enterprises operating in Albania were pointed out.
The two Ministers stressed that isolated acts of fanaticism, violence and extremism will not overshadow the friendly relations between the two countries.
With regard to issues of regional cooperation, the two Ministers were pleased at their convergence of views, as well as the constructive approach to related issues, and stressed the need for further enhancement of regional cooperation.
Mr. Molyviatis reiterated Greece's support for Albania's European integration process and stressed that respect for minority rights is among the criteria and preconditions that are to be met, in accordance with to the Declaration of the Presidency of the European Union of September 14, 2004.
Mr. Islami expressed his Government's gratitude for Greece's support, and reaffirmed the European orientation of the Albanian Government and its will to tackle the problems that exist.
